Charles volunteered for service in the United States Navy in 1917 following completion of his medical education at the University of Virginia. His first assignment was aboard the USS Connecticut, later serving aboard the hospital ship USS Comfort, and at the League Island Naval Hospital in Philadelphia.
Around 1919, Charles was selected for advanced surgical training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He subsequently served as an instructor in Xray at the Naval Medical School in Washington, D.C.
On June 6, 1920, Charles advanced from assistant surgeon to the rank of lieutenant. He later served as operating surgeon aboard the hospital ships USS Mercy and USS Relief.
In 1923, Charles was selected to accompany President Warren G. Harding on his trip to Alaska as the President’s personal surgeon.
